Chapter 15

Dawson looked at his phone. “It’s a message from Chris,” he told us. “The funeral is on tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow?” I squealed. “You’re kidding! Don’t they have to hang onto a murder victim longer than that?” I tried to remember. Goodness knows there had been plenty of murders since I arrived in Bayberry Creek.

“No, they take all the samples quickly, and this is a small town, not a city. They tend to release the body fairly quickly in a small town. In a city, it could be up to five days because there’d be a queue. Here, it was the only autopsy being conducted at the time. And the bodies are never held as direct evidence, of course.”

“I should know that,” I said rubbing my head. “I’ll store that away for next time.”

“Next time?” Thyme said in a shocked voice. “What makes you think there’ll be a next time?”

“Oh, um, oh, I certainly hope there isn’t a next time,” I sputtered. “It’s just that Bayberry Creek has had quite a few murders.”

“We will all attend the funeral. I think this has worked out for the best,” Ruprecht appeared excited. I noticed the strain had left his eyes. “The timing is quite good. We can observe the reactions of the estranged son and the new neighbours. I will have to find the estranged son’s name. We can’t keep calling him ‘the estranged son.’ What time is the funeral, Dawson?”

He looked back at his phone. “Ten.”

After we all agreed to meet at the funeral the following morning, I showed everyone out. I shut the door and turned around, straight into the well-muscled chest of my husband. “Eek!” I cried, which made him laugh.

“I hope I don’t always frighten you.”

I gave him a playful punch in the stomach. “You don’t frighten me at all.”

“Well, you’re frightening me testing my muscles all the time. How about an early night?” He gave me a naughty wink as he said it.

“Sounds good to me,” I said, “but I’m starving.”

“Just as well. I hope you have a good appetite, because dinner is on and almost ready.”

“You made dinner?” I asked him with delight.

“It wouldn’t be safe if you made it. It’s much safer me making it,” he said with a laugh and then ducked as I aimed another playful punch at his stomach.

Alder’s mood changed at once. “I won’t be able to go to the funeral tomorrow because my case is dragging on. Promise me you’ll be careful.”

“Of course,” I said.

He waved one finger at me. “You answered too quickly. You should think about it before you speak. I’m serious, Amelia. I really want you to be careful.”

“But it’s a funeral in a public place,” I said. “Whatever could happen to me there?”

“That’s just it,” Alder said with a frown. “You don’t want to attract the attention of the murderer. The murderer of course will be at the funeral—murderers typically attend the funerals of their victims, and if you start asking too many questions, the murderer might get antsy.
